The Hong Kong Prize (hk Prize) is an annual science and technology award bestowed by the Hong Kong Alliance of Technology and Innovation and sponsored by Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited. As a non-governmental merit-based award, its purpose is to encourage scientific and standardized management of BOCHK SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY INNOVATION PRIZE as well as objectiveness and fairness during its review process. Specifically designed to recognise scientists or research teams whose contributions have increased scientific or technological innovation as well as social or economic value within Hong Kong.
As well as receiving a cash prize, the winner will also receive a certificate and trophy to recognize their achievement. This year’s Hong Kong Prize nominations included activists fighting for freedom and democracy who have been arrested or sentenced to jail time under Beijing’s national security laws. Other finalists represented social justice initiatives and community service projects – like using technology to assist homeless individuals – that demonstrate the strength of human spirit even under pressure.
This October, the winners of the Hong Kong Prize will be revealed at an awards ceremony held for the first time at Hong Kong Palace Museum since it opened its doors in 2012. Acclaimed scientists from all around the world – including two Nobel Chemistry laureates – have been invited to take part. Considered Hong Kong’s equivalent of Oscars awards.
