The Hong Kong Prize (hk Prize) is an esteemed Asian competition that recognizes students for both academic achievements and extracurricular participation, awarding financial prizes as well as opportunities to conduct scientific research at some of Hong Kong’s premier facilities. Established in 2013, the Spirit of Hong Kong Awards celebrates and highlights Hong Kong’s unsung heroes while honoring their commitment to charity, civic awareness and goodwill. From acts of self-sacrifice or creativity for social good to tireless entrepreneurship – these regular citizens inspire others with their stories of courage and kindness.
Sammo Hung, a legendary martial arts film actor and veteran actor was honored with the 2024 Hong Kong International Film Festival’s (HKIFF) lifetime achievement award. Wong Sui-pong’s Obedience, which explores microcosmic life in Hung Hom, won jury prize; special mention went to Oksana Karpovych’s Intercepted for its juxtaposition between scenes from Ukraine since invasion and phone conversations among soldiers’ families and scenes depicting Ukraine during military service.
Established in 1993, HKIFF is a non-profit making organisation and one of Asia’s premier film festivals. Showcasing over 190 films annually from 62 countries and territories, voting takes place each January-March with winners being chosen by an international panel of film workers and critics. This year’s 49th HKIFF ran from March 28th – April 8th with Sho Miyake’s All The Long Nights as its closing film.
In 2022, China Daily journalists submitted over 100 entries for the Hong Kong Prize; senior reporter Xi Tianqi and copy editor James Cook both won second-runner up honours in two separate categories for their reporting on efforts to transform Hong Kong into a cultural hub and speedy roll-out of electric vehicles.
In 2021, BOCHK Science and Technology Innovation Prize was created to recognize scientists who had conducted impactful biotechnology or medicine-based research projects. The Prize is hosted and funded by the Hong Kong Alliance of Technology and Innovation with funding provided by Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited. Its Charter seeks to foster scientific management of awards as well as ensure objectivity and fairness for award recipients. Research must have been published in an accredited journal and relate to clinical practice or healthcare research, or can include humanities or social sciences topics related to healthcare – if interested, click here for more details and the submission deadline is 1 January 2021.
